Mashed potatoes

You can make delicious, fluffy, creamy mashed potatoes quickly and easily at home with just a few natural ingredients using this recipe. It is ideal as a side dish for many vegetarian and vegan meals. You can serve it at a party as well as for an ordinary dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg floury potatoes
  • 250 ml milk
  • 80 g butter
  • salt to taste
  • 1 pinch of black pepper ground
  • water for boiling potatoes

Instructions

  • Peel potatoes, cut them into large pieces and place them in a large saucepan.
  • Pour cold water over the potato pieces so that they are covered by about 1 - 2 cm and add 1 teaspoon of salt.
  • Bring the water with the potatoes to the boil and simmer with the lid on for approx. 20 minutes until the potato pieces are very soft.
  • Pour off the water from the potatoes and leave the potato pieces in the saucepan without the lid on the hot stove for approx. 10 minutes to evaporate.
  • Pour milk into a small saucepan with a thick base, add butter cut into pieces and bring to the boil briefly while stirring.
  • Mash the potatoes with a potato masher, adding black pepper and gradually pouring in the milk butter mixture as you mash to create a creamy mashed potatoes.
  • Season the mashed potatoes with salt and black pepper if necessary and serve.

Notes

  • Depending on how creamy you want the mashed potatoes to be, you can adjust the amount of butter and milk.
  • The cooking time stated may vary depending on the size of your potato pieces. To check whether they are cooked, prick one of the potato pieces with a fork. If it is very soft and possibly falling apart, the potatoes are done.
  • You can also season the potatoes with nutmeg.
  • For a vegan version, replace cow's milk with a plant-based milk in the recipe and animal butter with a vegan butter alternative.
